A small scale Aprilia. That was the philosophy that led Lancia to offer the marketplace the Ardea in 1939. With its elegant, profiled and aerodynamic lines and powered by a V4 engine, the new car opened up a new and unexplored segment of the market for Lancia, which had produced elitist cars until then, aimed at a restricted clientele. Between 1939 and 1953, when the fourth and final Ardea series went out of production, 31,000 examples of the car had been built in their various forms. The little Aurelia, called the Lancia Appia, first appeared in 1953 and was built in three successive series, in addition to special bodied versions, until 1963. The car was the latest in a string of successes for the Turin manufacturer. This book tells the technical, industrial and motor sport stories of these two milestones of their time, with attractive archive pictures and a simple, precise text.
